Tunnelling the A2 Motorway under Maastricht

July 24th, 2013

Nowadays, motorway A2 crosses the Dutch city Maastricht and causes a lot of nuisance for local residents. In order to overcome this distress a stacked tunnel with a length of approximately 2.3 km is being build.

Avenue2’s Green Carpet will make Maastricht more easily accessible and create a smooth through-flow of traffic at the Geusselt and Europaplein interchange of the A2. At the same time, it will present new opportunities for upgrading adjacent neighbourhoods by, amongst other things, improving traffic safety and quality of life in Maastricht Oost.

The A2-tunnel will be ready at the end of 2016. In total 4 tunnel tubes will be built; 2 on top, 2 at the bottom. All tunnel tubes feature 2 lanes. The upper tunnel tubes are destined for regional and local traffic (max. 80 km/hr); the lower tunnel tubes are for transit traffic (max. 100 km/hr).

For this project Gouda-Geo supplied quite some monitoring equipment, including 1500 metres of inclinometer casing tubes to monitor the sheet pile walls.
